What is confirmed, what is claimed, and what is rumour in the making of Ramayana: Part 1, each fact tied to a named statement or an official campaign object
This is the production record. Every date is tied to a named statement or an official campaign object. Rumour is labelled. Press budget figures are not treated as fact.
What This Film Is
Ramayana: Part 1 is a Hindi-language theatrical adaptation of the Valmiki epic, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios with DNEG and Yash's Monster Mind Creations. It is the first of two parts. Published principal roles: Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman. Music: A. R. Rahman with Hans Zimmer on the larger score. Sony Pictures handles international distribution outside India; Dharma Productions is named for the North Indian Hindi window.
That is the object. The rest of this article is how that object reached the public record.
The Man Behind the Vision
Namit Malhotra is founder of Prime Focus and Global CEO of DNEG. The corporate path is documented: a mid-1990s Mumbai garage editing room (Video Workshop); Prime Focus in 1997; the 2014 combination with London's Double Negative that created DNEG. Profiles also record his film-trade parentage: son of producer Naresh Malhotra, grandson of cinematographer M. N. Malhotra.
In a Hindustan Times conversation later cited across 2025–26 profiles, he dated the screen idea to 2015 and said cameras did not turn until 2023. He said he wanted not only to make India proud but to "excite the world about Indian storytelling," and that the epic has the kind of universal pull he associates with films such as Oppenheimer or Forrest Gump.
On 4 July 2025, posting the public beginning of the cast film, he wrote: "Ten years of Aspiration."
When They Thought of It: Three Layers
- Intention (c. 2015–2024). Interviews say 2015. The 6 November 2024 announcement said "more than a decade ago." Same long gestation. No month.
- First industry announcement (May 2017). Trade described a live-action trilogy and other producers beside him. That plan is history. It is not this two-part Tiwari film.
- The current film (6 November 2024). Malhotra's own caption, below.

Research and Design, as Stated
The published duty is double: reverence for those who grew up inside the story, and a cinematic sentence the rest of the world can enter. He has described the built worlds as faithful to calendar and poster art, using a global effects house. That is intention, not a shot list.
Tiwari's published emphasis, around the April 2026 Rama introduction, is emotional richness (choices and consequences), not pageant. Those two briefs are the creative frame on record.
From First Thoughts to the Current Cast
On 18 July 2026 in Delhi, Tiwari said Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi were his first choices, and that he saw Rama and Sita in their eyes. Malhotra said the director had been clear and that he shared the sentiment.

When Sai Pallavi Joined
On-record, her words, 3 July 2025: "With the blessings of Maa Sita, I get to experience her journey…" This was the first moment she herself put the role into public language.
On-record, method, 18 July 2026: she did not think she chose the role; meditation; "Sita Maa, you act through me."
Trade only, 6 February 2024: a Bollywood Hungama fact-check treated the part as locked. Not an official poster. Reported Part 1 photography from April 2024 would mean she was working before the July 2025 note. Working is not announced.
Why They Claim This Scale
This is not the first screen Ramayana. Sagar's 1987–88 serial trained a nation's eye; Govil as Dasharatha is also that memory. So importance cannot mean novelty of plot.
What Malhotra has claimed is different: an Indian epic in the same kind of auditorium as other origin stories; DNEG's infrastructure used for this story; two parts and an international Friday window as part of the respect. In May 2026 he said there is never a perfect time, and that the moment arrived when the company he built could carry an Indian story at that scale.
Whether the films meet that brief is a question for after release.

Sony Pictures: When the World Window Opened
Sony Pictures Entertainment joined in public on 23–24 July 2026 as international distributor for all territories outside India. Variety dated the deal 23 July. On 24 July, The Hindu reported Malhotra's post: the partnership made his "dream of taking Ramayana to the world" a reality, and the trailer planned for that week was postponed so it could launch globally later. DNEG's note of 28 July confirmed the split: Sony overseas; Dharma on North India's Hindi-speaking markets.
That is why the trailer moved to 30 July, and why the English trailer could carry a Sony date. 6 November 2026 is the Sony Friday window. India's Diwali target is a separate sentence.
Malhotra, in the deal statement: decades at DNEG had been spent helping other filmmakers realise ambitious visions; with Prime Focus Studios that commitment was now pointed at this epic; Sony gave it "an extraordinary opportunity to connect with international audiences."
IMAX and 3D
From the official July 2025 introduction film onward, credit blocks carry Filmed for IMAX. TheWrap, with the Sony story, called it the first Indian production to receive that label.
The pictures have been shown that way in public. Introduction asset at PVR IMAX, Lower Parel, 3 July 2025. Rama glimpse on the same screen 2 April 2026, Malhotra and Tiwari present. Those hall reports described a 3D presentation. IMAX is the official format claim. 3D is how those early assets were shown in that hall. A final inventory of IMAX 2D versus IMAX 3D theatrical prints has not been issued in the sources used here.
Brahma AI: The Lip-Sync Technology
The English-language trailer, released 5 August 2026, carried the film's most talked-about technical claim: Brahma AI, a lip-synchronisation system developed in-house by DNEG. Its stated purpose is to localise a performance across languages by adjusting an actor's mouth movements to match new dialogue, rather than replacing the performance with a separate voice actor's dub.
Reporting on the English trailer is not fully aligned on scope. Eastern Eye described the principal cast, including Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi, as having recorded their own English dialogue, with Brahma AI adjusting lip movement to match. IBTimes India reported it differently: Ranbir Kapoor dubbed his own English dialogue, while Yash and some other cast members had their voices dubbed using AI. Both accounts agree on the technology's name, its developer, and its function. They do not agree on exactly whose voice is whose in the English cut. That distinction is noted here rather than resolved.
The stated aim, across every outlet that covered it, is the same: preserve an actor's original vocal identity and expression while removing the mismatched-mouth problem common to conventional dubbing. Coverage from Eastern Eye, IBTimes India, Pragativadi, and Dainik Jagran was uniformly positive on the visible result, with several describing it as a possible template for future multilingual releases rather than a one-off trailer effect.
The Company Assembled
Their line on the July 2025 introduction film: "a collaboration of some of the world's best," so the epic would be presented "with the greatest amount of Reverence and Respect." That is their sentence. The named roster:
- Direction: Nitesh Tiwari. At the April 2026 IMAX screening he said it had taken him seven years to reach that point.
- Screenplay: Shridhar Raghavan with Tiwari.
- Cast: first-choice Rama and Sita; Yash; Deol; Dubey; Govil.
- Music: Rahman and Zimmer; lyrics Kumar Vishwas.
- Visual effects: DNEG, the house Malhotra built.
- Production design: Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal (Hollywood Reporter).
- Action: Terry Notary and Guy Norris (Hollywood Reporter, September 2026).
- Distribution: Sony from 23–24 July 2026 outside India; Dharma, North Indian Hindi window.
That list is not a review of whether each department is "the best in the world." It is the roster they published, and the claim they attached to it.
